A Day in the Life of.....
This is where us bloggers & fans get a glimpse inside the days of our favorite authors!
-------------------
Macy Beckett is an unrepentant escapist who left teaching to write hot and humorous romances. No offense to her former students, but her new career is way more fun! She lives just outside Cincinnati in the appropriately-named town of Loveland, Ohio, with her husband and three children. In addition to romance, she publishes young adult science fiction under the name Melissa Landers. Visit her on the web at macybeckett.com.
A Day in the Life of..
Greetings, voyeurs! I’m romance author, Macy Beckett, and I’d like to welcome you to a day in my life. If you assume an author’s existence is a whirlwind of book signings and glitzy parties, allow me to shatter your illusions. But don’t worry—I’ll try to be gentle.
Here’s what a typical day looks like for me:
7:00 am: Awake. Stumble directly downstairs to make coffee and glare at machine in an effort to make it drip faster.
7:15 am: Consume two cups of hot, liquid motivation while packing lunches and supervising three children dress and eat breakfast. Answer email, update Facebook status, and maybe even schedule a tweet or two.
7: 50 am: Drive kid #2 to the bus stop…usually while wearing my bathrobe. (I wish I were joking.)
8:00 am – 9:00 am: Shower and don my “author uniform” of yoga pants, long-sleeved T-shirt, and an old black hoodie that I should have discarded years ago. Forego makeup and styling my hair beyond running a brush through it. Drive kid #3 to preschool and hope I don’t scare the children with my haggard appearance. Also make sure kid #1 makes it onto the bus.
9:15 am – 12:20 pm: Return home and write, write, write. I’m very fortunate in that my agent has sold three series for me, (“Sultry Springs,” available now from Sourcebooks, “Romain Brothers,” coming in 2014 from Penguin, and “Alienated,” coming in 2014 from Disney-Hyperion), but this means I have to work quickly. I have three manuscripts due in the next year. It’s important that I meet my daily word count and keep my nose to the proverbial grindstone.
12:30 pm- 1:00 pm: Pick up kid #2 from preschool, bring him home, and put him down for a nap, which he only takes about half the time.
1:00 pm – whenever kid #3 wakes up: Write, write, write. Maybe eat something.
3:00 pm – 6:30 pm: Write, write, write in between caring for the kids and throwing something together for supper.
6:30 pm – 8:00 pm: Once my husband gets home, it’s family time, though I do sneak in some writing if I can. At 8pm we put the kids to bed.
8:00 pm – 10:00 pm: If I have any brain power left, I write and/or revise. If not, I’ll read, watch a little TV, or suggest edits for my critique partners.
10:00 pm: Go to sleep…until tomorrow, when I wash, rinse, repeat.
Not very glamorous, is it? I’ll be the first to admit that I don’t have a healthy work-life balance right now. It’s a challenge to launch a writing career in dual genres, and I’m hoping I can slow down a bit after all this hard work pays off.
Speaking of which, if you enjoy hot and humorous contemporary romance, I think you’d love my debut, Sultry with a Twist, and the second book in my Sultry Springs series, A Shot of Sultry. If you’re a sci-fi fan, I hope you’ll add Alienated to your GoodReads shelf! Books make great holiday gifts…just sayin’.

ReplyDeleteThis is the first I am hearing of "Romain Brothers" ~ I don't have any books on my Christmas list - it was an over-site on my part, but the hubby usually tosses a gift card into the stocking ~~~ I LOVE THAT MAN!!!

Horrible for me to say this....but no books are on my Christmas list!! I know...but I did ask for Amazon gift cards so that I can pick out the books myself:) better, huh? Lol!

I usually don't have any books on my Christmas list! Because even if I used to ask for them, people never get them anyways because they didn't think books were good enough or that it wasn't original enough. So I stopped putting them on my list. =D
