Review: Super Scary Crochet by Nicki Trench

Title:  Super Scary Crochet
Author:  Nicki Trench
Genre:  Crafts, Crochet Patterns
Pages:  112
Published:  August 2011

Synopsis: (via Amazon)

If you are bored of cute and sweet crochet, then you will love Nicki Trench’s gruesome, spooky and downright disturbing collection of zombies, witches, murderers and more.

There are four chapters of characters who have committed all kinds of unforgivable deeds. The first chapter, Scary Families, has creepy relatives who definitely believe that blood is thicker than  water, such as the Queen of the Vampires, complete with felt crown and lace detailing. In Famous Scaries, meet classic characters like the Headless Horseman, who has crocheted blood spurting from his neck, and his horse Hades, made in jet-black yarn. The Living Dead is a
macabre mix of werewolves, witches and the clinically insane, while the Deathly Companions chapter has murderous villains and even a shrunken head.

As well as crocheting your own cast of scary characters, you will find patterns for accessories including the spider bag complete with eight legs. At the back of the book is a comprehensive techniques section explaining all you need to know, which makes the projects suitable for any skill level.

When I first opened the parcel this book arrived in, I wasn't sure what to think of this pattern book.  It wasn't something I would normally pick up for myself.  I have to say it's probably the most unique, macabre and fun pattern book I've ever had the pleasure of creating something from!

The patterns are easy to read, have great photos and are very straight forward.  Each pattern has a little story behind the character.  For example, the lovely young lady on the front cover of the book is Queen Lucy of the Vampires.  Her story is:  The Queen is a very, very old woman vampire who is posing as a beautiful young teenage girl - like all vampires, she is immortal.  Over many centuries she developed an unquenchable blood thirst for fit young teenage boys who like to play baseball and basketball.

Some of the characters in the this pattern book include:  Payne the Goth Girl, Natty the Batty, Tink the Three Headed Dog and Bernard Bigfoot.

Anyone who loves to make fun and unique toys and accessories will love this book.
