Lee Roland began her writing career in middle school when she wrote a short story for her brother. He turned the story in to his teacher as his own work.  To his amazement and terror, the teacher was so impressed that she read it aloud to the class—and asked him to write another one.

Lee notes that, other than motherhood, she’s never had an exciting job.  She might have dreamed of being  a lawyer, nurse or police officer, but finding the right person to share her life with changed her plans.  Her only credentials for writing are a terrific imagination, life experience and the love of words in a good story.  She reads voraciously, but particularly loves Urban Fantasy and Paranormal Romance.

Lee lives in Florida and is a full-time writer.  She is a member of RWA National and the Florida based First Coast Romance Writers.  Before being published, Lee won many RWA Chapter contests and garnered a Golden Heart nomination in 2008 with her post apocalyptic novel, LILITH’S CHILD.

Lee is the author of the Earth Witches series published by NAL, beginning with VIPER MOON in 2011.

Nyx ran away from Twitch Crossing ten years ago to escape the stiff rules and duties of being a true Witch. She wanted a life of her own. Now she’s been dragged back to her swampy hometown because another life is in danger—her little sister is missing, and Nyx is the only one who can go to Duivel, Missouri and track her down.  But the key to finding her may lie with the dark and tempting Etienne—a sinister criminal with a fearsome reputation, a ruthless attitude, and a total immunity to magic…

---------------------------------------------------------------

Vicious Moon is the story of Nyx Ianira, an earth witch and former soldier turned mercenary guard. Nyx goes to Barrows section of Duivel, Missouri to find her missing sister, Marisol. In the Barrows, she meets her match in Etienne, a man with a past even more complex than her own. She also finds that it will require all her mercenary and magical skills to survive.

Vicious Moon follows Viper Moon (2011) and Vengeance Moon (2012) in telling the tale of the earth witches and their companions as they fight evil.

Earth Witches almost always have familiars, usually animal friends with incredibly strong personal connections to the individual witch. Familiars are blessed by the Earth Mother with intelligence and powers that allow them aid in the use of magic. If you ask the witch who has a familiar, sometimes the word blessing is often interspersed with more colorful expressions. Familiars have a tendency to be a bit independent.

In Vicious Moon, Nyx’s familiar is Herschel. Herschel is a dog, but Nyx often applies other terms to describe him.

The morning after my capture I sat in the hotel lobby handcuffed and feet chained, with Herschel’s massive head on my knee. His floppy jowls slimed my pants with slobber. Herschel’s heritage seemed to be mostly Bull Mastiff crossed with a Great Dane. He weighed in at two hundred pounds, far larger than any domestic dog. Black as the inside of a deep mountain cave, he could be mistaken for a small pony at a distance. I did love him, in spite of my irritation. I’m told he arrived on the doorstep the day I was born. His primary functions in life were sleeping, eating and farting. And there was the incessant drooling.

Later, Herschel accompanies Nyx on her journey to Duivel.

Gran insisted that I take her car to Duivel. I’d need the car because no way would any respectable driver allow Herschel on a bus, and I didn’t have enough money to pay for damages to a rental car. Gran’s vehicle had been parked in the barn for many years. It truly surprised me when the mechanical beast actually started—and had a current tag and registration. The shit-colored behemoth of an Oldsmobile she bought in the 1970s roared down the highway, sucking in gasoline at ten miles to the gallon. She told me gas was fifty-five cents a gallon when she bought it.

Herschel hung his head out the window most of the way, even at seventy miles an hour. That way, he only slimed the side of the car that the few foolish drivers who drove too close behind me. We ate mostly at fast food restaurants—ten burgers for him and one with fries for me. Feeding Herschel fries had a tendency to increase his gas levels from intensive to explosive.

It was okay except for the time some woman chewed me out for feeding a dog “people food.” I ignored her, but Herschel thanked her for her concern by sticking his nose up her crotch and sliming her legs.

Herschel is not always the gentlest of creatures.

I woke when Herschel grabbed my foot and dragged me off the bed. My butt hit first, then my head. Thank the Mother for carpet. I yelped and let out a few choice words then threatened to send him to the dog pound.

And he has a indiscriminate appetite.

“Did you get anything to eat, Hersch?” I’d have to hit a fast food restaurant or grocery if he hadn’t. Unfortunately, I’d have to borrow money to do it. The cops still had my wallet.

“He’s eaten.” Etienne spoke in a terse, irritated voice. He glared at Herschel. “He went into the kitchen, stared at the cooks for a few minutes, and they immediately fed him. He apparently ate enough for ten men. Is he a witch, too? Is that possible?”

I glanced at Herschel who was licking his balls with loud slurps. “To tell the truth, I’m not exactly sure what he is.”

But he can come to the rescue when necessary.

It slammed me back so hard I cried out and jerked in my seat. Blast furnace light blinded me. My head smacked against the window. My legs went numb.

Herschel lunged forward. His massive mouth closed on Etienne’s neck. Etienne clawed for his gun.

“Herschel,” I screamed. “Stop!”

I used what little strength I had to throw myself over and grabbed Etienne’s wrist so he couldn’t draw. He froze.

“Let him go, Herschel.” I gasped out the words.

Herschel held for a second, then released him. My familiar growled in warning. He had let go physically, but kept alert.

I drew deep gasping breaths, unable to pull oxygen in fast enough. My stomach churned and my heart raced. What a disaster. Etienne had red marks on his neck where Herschel’s teeth had come deathly close to removing his head. I’d seen my familiar bite the head of an alligator. A man didn’t stand a chance.

Book Tour: Bring Me Back by Karen Booth

I’m Karen, a Midwestern girl transplanted in the South, raised on 80s music, Judy Blume, and the films of John Hughes. An early preoccupation with Rock ‘n’ Roll led me to spend my twenties working my way from intern to executive in the music industry. Much of my writing revolves around the world of backstage passes and band dynamics. My first full-length novel, “Bring Me Back”, is a story I had in my head for nearly eight years before my fingers hit the keyboard. Sleeping and eating quickly became a luxury, a plan I have since dubbed the Writer’s Diet. I channeled teenage memories of plastering my walls with posters to weave the tale of music journalist, Claire Abby, and the dreamy British rock-star crush of her youth, Christopher Penman. “Bring Me Back” is a work of women’s fiction, published by Turquoise Morning Press. When I’m not creating fictional musicians, I’m listening to everything from old-school Cheap Trick to Duran Duran to Superchunk with my kids, honing my Southern
